Quote of the Day - Chapter 11

I put for the general inclination of all mankind, a perpetual and restless desire of power after power, that ceaseth only in death.
Thomas Hobbes

What does it mean?
How does it relate to Chapter 11?

  1. this quote, by Thomas Hobbes, to me means that when several men are in search for the desire of power, it makes them compete. Most of the time, if the prize is the greatness of power, it can end in a deadly way. if one individual stands in the way of power of another, he will do anything to achieve his goal and to stay alive. In chapter 11 of lord of the flies, Jack doesn't let Piggy, Ralph or the twins stand in his way of Power. With the four boys trying just to get Piggy's glasses back, Jack takes it to a level were he takes Piggy's life away and hold the twins prisoners. Jack already had power, he was the chief of his own tribe but with the desire of power for hole islands, it caused death for him to achieve. after Piggy lost his life, jack said, "I'm Chief" p.201. this short quote shows his goal he had for a lot time that he finally achieved.

  2. This quote represents pretty much that as humans we desire an increase of power and will sometimes stop at nothing to accomplish this. We went through this in both World War 1 and 2 where people went to war so they can gain more territory and thus more power. We see this quote in action in chapter 11 as Jack and his camp kill piggy because they don't like the fact he is with Ralph and they want to have power over them."See?See? That's what you'll get! I meant that! There isn't a tribe for you any more! The conch is gone..." This quote shows that Jack wants Ralph to know that he can no longer lead and he wants the power and has iut through force after killing PIGGY.
